Pop Quiz: How Many Possible Games Can an Individual Play in an NBA Season? (it's not necessarily 82...)

Did you know there are 40 players in NBA history who, due to trades (or possibly time travel, still investigating this one), actually played in more than 82 games in a season?

I wrote a query to see the full list (here) -

The only active players whom this happened to were:

  • Ramon Sessions during 2013-14 season when he was traded from the Bobcats to the Bucks and played 83 games.
That's right Ramon, you played in one more game
than any other player in the league last season!
  • Jarrett Jack during the 2010-11 season when he was traded from Toronto to the New Orleans Hornets and played 83 games.
The record for games in a season goes to the late Hall-of-Famer Walt Bellamy, who played in 88 games during the 1968-69 season with the Knicks and Pistons. Bellamy was also part of the first NBA team that started five black players (the 1961-62 Chicago Packers).

There's no games started data on the older players, so there's a chance Bellamy actually holds the record for most games started. But based off of the data available on Basketball Reference, there's a three way tie for most games started

  • Mike Mitchel - 83 of 84 games started in 1981-82 with the Cavs and Spurs
  • Jalen Rose - 83 of 83 games started in 2001-02 with the Pacers and Bulls
  • Theo Ratliff - 83 of 85 games started in 2003-04 with the Hawks and Blazers
I wonder how this works with their contracts? Do they get an extra game check? Do they get a special gift such as a MakerBot? A shiny penny to whomever can find out the answer for me.
