Rapid Reaction: Mavericks 96 @ Nets 88 (OT)

I attended tonight's Mavs @ Nets game at the Barclay's Center. Here are some thoughts -

Rare Assist-Rebound Double Double: Rajon Rondo had a relatively rare assist-rebound double double with 2 points, 10 rebounds, 14 assists. This only happens in the NBA about 2 to 3 times per year (77 times since 1985-86), and four of the last five were courtesy of Rondo. He's also the first Mavs player to accomplish the feat other than Jason Kidd, who did it eight times. However, out of the 77 games, this was the third worst shooting percentage of the group (1-13 FG), and the worst shooting percentage for someone who attempted more than 5 shots.

Should the Nets have hack-a-Rondo'd?: As I wrote in an article for Deadspin, Rondo is on pace to have the worst single season free throw percentage for a guard in NBA history. Tonight Rondo missed both of his free-throws in his only trip to the line. The Nets had a chance to foul him at the end of the game when they were up by 2 with under 30 seconds remaining. That would have sent him to the line for two shots and given the ball back to the Nets for a final shot. But they ended up not fouling him, and Monte Ellis ultimately got the ball, drove to the bucket, got fouled, and made both free throws to tie the game. The Nets had a last shot but missed to send the game into overtime. Once in overtime, the Nets fell behind - but had a situation with under a minute left where they should have fouled in order to try and get the ball back. Rondo touched the ball in this possession, which was the perfect opportunity to foul. But they didn't, and ultimately the ball got to Dirk, who hit a 3 to put the game out of reach. That shot moved him into 7th place on the all-time NBA scoring list ahead of Moses Malone.

5483/5493: The Nets shot 3-25 from 3 pt, the 10th worst all time for a team with at least 25 3 pt attempts (out of 5493 games in this category). The Celtics went 1-25 earlier this year.

51: Tyson Chandler had 8 offensive rebounds - the 51st time in his career that he has had at least 8 in a game. Dennis Rodman had 153 career games with at least 8 offensive rebounds. Chandler grabbed the 8 rebounds in 10 offensive rebound chance opportunities for an 80% conversion rate on offensive rebounds. The fact that he had more offensive rebounds that Mason Plumlee had defensive rebounds (7) is a bad sign for the Nets. That could've been the difference between winning and losing.
